What is crabgrass?

Crabgrass is a warm season grassy weed in Mckinney and other parts of north Texas. Its unsightly stalks grow faster than your desirable turf. It is an annual weed, meaning it produces seeds during its growing season. The seeds fall in to the soil and lay waiting until the next season comes around. It is also a weed that Texas Lawnscapes will prevent and kill!

Can crabgrass be prevented?

Once again, the answer is yes when choosing Texas Lawnscapes as your lawn service provider. As mentioned before, crabgrass is an annual weed that dies off in the winter and it grows new from seed each spring. Therefore, we control it by using pre-emergent herbicides, before the seeds germinate. We treat before the weed emerges. Timing of the application usually falls in late February or early March. Well before the temperatures warm up past the point a seed begins to germinate. If timed just right, the herbicide forms a barrier that lasts well into the summer. Effectively preventing the target weed all season long. You get what you pay for when it comes to pre-emergent herbicide. For that reason, we use only the latest and greatest products, regardless of cost.

Does anything else help control crabgrass?

We always apply a slow release, high nitrogen fertilizer when spot treating. We help the desirable turf repair and regrow, filling in where the weed had taken over. The fertilizer promotes a thick, healthy lawn. As a result, weeds cannot compete and less herbicides are required. We encourage customers to follow a proper watering schedule. Most herbicides will not work in dry conditions.
